Project Overview
ODF - Origins is the very first website I ever created, built in 2014 when I was just 17 years old using only a mobile phone and WordPress. At a time when web design resources, tutorials, and mobile development tools were far less accessible than they are today, this project became the foundation of my journey into digital design and development.
The website was created as an entertainment blog focused on South African music, local events, artists, and youth culture. Its purpose was to provide a platform where visitors could discover new music, stay informed about upcoming events, and engage with the growing entertainment scene.
Although the design reflects the limitations of the tools and experience I had at the time, ODF – Origins represents far more than my first website. It marks the beginning of my curiosity for creating digital experiences and the first step toward the UX/UI and product designer I am today.
The Challenge
In 2014, building websites on a mobile phone presented unique challenges. Access to modern design tools, educational resources, and responsive design frameworks was extremely limited compared to today. Every page had to be created using the capabilities available within WordPress while working around the constraints of mobile hardware and internet connectivity.
The challenge wasn't simply building a blog, it was learning the fundamentals of web design, information organization, content management, and user navigation with very limited resources.
The Solution
To overcome these limitations, I created a structured entertainment blog that made it easy for visitors to browse articles, discover new content, and stay updated with local events and artists.
The website included a simple navigation structure, categorized blog posts, archive pages, search functionality, and clear content organization to help users quickly find information. Rather than focusing on complex visuals, the design prioritized accessibility and content, ensuring that visitors could easily explore the latest entertainment news.
Building the project with WordPress also introduced me to the importance of content management systems, website structure, and designing experiences around user need, principles that continue to influence my design process today.
Design Approach
The design reflected both the capabilities of WordPress at the time and my understanding of web design as a beginner.
Key principles included:
Simple navigation
Content-first layouts
Organized blog categories
Search functionality
Easy article discovery
Consistent page structure
While modest by today's standards, these decisions helped create a usable experience that encouraged visitors to explore entertainment content with minimal friction.
Outcome
ODF – Origins became my introduction to web design, content management, and digital product creation. More importantly, it taught me the value of experimentation, continuous learning, and solving problems with the resources available.
Looking back, the project represents the beginning of a journey that has since evolved into designing modern user experiences, interactive prototypes, and digital products using tools such as Figma and contemporary front-end technologies.
Reflection
ODF – Origins remains one of the most meaningful projects in my portfolio—not because of its visual polish, but because it represents where my journey began. Building a website on a mobile phone at the age of 17 taught me to be resourceful, curious, and persistent. It sparked a passion for design and technology that continues to shape my work today.
Looking back at this project reminds me that great designers are not defined by where they start, but by their willingness to learn, adapt, and continuously improve. Every project since then has been built on the lessons I first learned while creating ODF – Origins.
